Karen's Studio Blog
Greetings and salutations,
I love journals and sketchbooks. I have at least 4 journals going at any one time. These are my planning journal, inspiration journal, sketch book, and gardening journal.
The planning journal I use for to dos, goal setting, recording marketing or other business information that I want to refer to at a later date. My inspiration journal is where I collect thoughts about my work, books I’ve read, quotes that I find meaningful, leaves from hikes because I liked their color, really anything I find inspiring or moving to me personally.
My sketchbook is filled with sketches taken on location, inspired from within or from photographs that I’ve taken. These are mostly in pencil, but I also use my sketchbook to experiment with other media as well. At one time I tried to keep a journal of the color mixtures I used in my paintings. It’s a good idea but not one that works for me. When I premixed all the paint I used in a painting it was easy to keep that kind of record, but since I mix more on the fly now I find that kind of record keeping takes away from the actual process and enjoyment of painting.
My gardening journal is my most neglected journal that I have. Each new gardening season I have high hopes of getting it caught up as well as my gardening but the last few years it’s been more miss that hit.
Another journal that I work in occasionally is the “Wreck This Journal” by Keri Smith. It’s a fun distraction that challenges what a journal can be.
Do you love sketchbooks and journals like I do? How do you use them and what kind of information do you collect? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
Take care and have a beautiful day,
