Greetings and salutations,

El Paso is another painting in the Family-isms series. I wanted to talk about this painting for Mother's Day since it is based on a photograph of my niece taken by my mother while on a trip to El Paso, TX. My niece, Theresa whose portrait is the focus of the painting, was the first grandbaby in the family. She's now a mother with her own family.

The spatial relationship, between my niece, the car, and the flag in the distance, to the viewer was very interesting and one of the main reasons why I wanted to paint from this particular photograph. I was also fascinated by the unusual squatting position of the figure, the position of the arms and gesture of the hands.

My mother was particularly interested in candid photographs of family members where they had no idea that their photo was being taken but she would also stage photographs so that had symbolic or metaphoric themes. This portrait is somewhere between a candid and staged photo that has symbolic elements.

Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers and mothers to be. I hope your day is filled with wonderful memories.

Take care and have a beautiful day,
