Karen's Studio Blog
Greetings and salutations,
I wanted to continue with the Mother's Day theme for May with paintings in the Family-isms series featuring women in my family and/or photographs taken by my mother.
The Deer is a double portrait based on a black and white photograph taken by my mother. The photo hung in my parents house and was one that I enjoyed viewing. When I started the Family-isms series it seemed a perfect source photograph. Nothing makes the familiar seem more unfamiliar than painting a well known family photograph.
Shown are my two brothers, Lyle and Jeff, and their encounter with a white-tailed deer in our backyard where I grew up. The interaction between the figures and the deer was unique. Each relating to the deer very differently. The deer seemed very tame to allow this kind of contact while eating.
Take care and have a beautiful day,
